BACKGROUND
Cavalieri del Mare's Origins
Cavalieri del Mare is situated along the historic Salt Road (“via del sale”), which originally connected the duchy of Massa-Carrara with the duchy of Modena-Parma at its first kilometer. This ancient route, known as the “via del sale,” served both pilgrims and merchants, deriving its name from the valuable salt trade that once thrived along its path. The hotel itself was constructed as a summer hunting residence for the distinguished Sforza family, a prominent Italian family that long held sway over the duchy of Milan.
Several remnants of the original villa’s architecture still grace the hotel. Initially built in 1700 without side wings, the villa features an antique sundial with the inscription “Horas non numero nisi serenas,” translating to “I do not count the hours unless they are peaceful.”
The annex, characterized by its arches, once served as stables, while the 1700 wooden beams in various rooms showcase the villa’s authentic charm. The meticulously carved cipollino marble stairs also date back to the 1700s.
The park surrounding the hotel is adorned with majestic pine and oak trees. In the garden facing the villa, a white marble well from the 1600s and a domed well dating back to 1000 stand as captivating historical artifacts.
